Abstract

In this paper, the issues of today's maritime hydrography and its state are discussed. The substance of maritime hydrography and its state of development are presented. The maritime hydrography is shown and discussed from three different points of view: as the kind of maritime human activity and special maritime service; as the maritime profession and field of undergraduate and graduate education, and as the branch of science.

Abstract

The aim of this study was an assessment of feasibility of conversion of sewage holding (SH) tanks to rainwater harvesting (RWH) tanks in Poland. Such a conversion may partly solve the problem of water scarcity for irrigation of plants in individual small gardens and reduce tap water consumption. Seven methods of RWH tanks sizing were applied to an example of a small harvesting system of the roof area equal to the garden irrigation area of 100 m2 for three different irrigation doses. A new criterion was introduced to optimize the tank capacity. Economic optimization was provided for new RWH tanks and for the tanks adapted from abandoned SH tanks. Results obtained for a system sited in west-central Poland in an average year have shown that design capacity of RWH tanks varied markedly between sizing methods. The conversion of SH tanks to RWH tanks is profitable, especially for irrigation due to scarcity of water in relatively dry west-central regions. Conversion of individual SH tanks in a good technical state to RWH tanks is relatively simple and cheap. The potential increase in storage volume due to the conversion of individual SH tanks to RWH tanks could reach all over Poland 215–350 dam3 per year, and individually can save up to 18–25% of total annual water use.

Abstract

The study on water erosion in the catchment basin of the Jeleni Brook was carried out in the years 1995–1999. The catchment of the Jeleni Brook has complex relief, receives frequent pre-cipitations and thus is more threatened by water erosion. Soil cultivation and water from quickly melting snow can also be the factors affecting soil erosion. Waters from the melting snow produce rills of the following dimensions (mean values): width from 11.5 to 13.6 cm, depth – from 6.4 to 7.1 cm and length – from 39 to 112 m. The mean values of soil losses vary from 0.5 to 2.02 t·ha–1.

Erosion caused by intensive storm precipitation occurs less frequently but makes much higher soil losses. One of the registered incidents shows that 51.6 t·ha–1 (4.5 mm of soil layer) can be washed out from the area of 0.66 ha. Combined effect of outwashing and ploughing in lower parts of slopes created new forms of relief such as agricultural terraces (escarps). Agricultural terraces assume the shape of scarps up to 2 m high and of different length (e.g. 150 m) along with the land use border-lines between e.g. forest and field or field and grassland.

Agriculturally used soils within this catchment need protection based mainly on agrotechnical measures or on alteration of land use. Some areas should be afforested.

Abstract

The article presents the results of research, the aim of which was to determine the qualitative and quantitative structure of the causes of accidents that were a result of falling from scaffolding. An original methodology for the classification of accidents with regards to their causes was developed and was based on cluster analysis. An example of using the proposed methodology is provided. 187 post-accident protocols of occupational accidents involving construction scaffolding, which occurred between 2010 and 2017 in selected Polish voivodeships, were analyzed. Afterwards, the matrix of accident causes, for which the calculations were made, was created. Five subsets of accidents were obtained and the accidents were classified to a subset with similar causes.

Abstract

Celem pracy było poznanie zawartości Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Cr, Cd w glebach leśnych Parku Krajobrazowego "Podlaski Przełom Bugu". Badania pierwiastków śladowych w glebach były prowadzone na obszarze rezerwatu "Lęg Dębowy" oraz "Stary Las". Zawartość pierwiastków śladowych oznaczono metodą ASA w roztworze uzyskanym po mineralizacji prób glebowych w mineralizatorze mikrofalowym w stężonym kwasic azotowym oraz 30% nadtlenku wodoru. Badane gleby nic są zanieczyszczone metalami ciężkimi. Średnia geometryczna zawartość pierwiastków w badanych glebach tworzyła następujący szereg: Mn (229) > Zn (23, I) > Pb ( 15,0) > Cr ( 11,6) > Cu (7,4) > Ni (6,4) > Cd (0, 11) mg-kg:' s.m. Stwierdzono, że pierwiastki śladowe kumulowały się głównie w poziomach organicznych i mineralno-organicznych. Analiza statystyczna wykazała wysoce istotne korelacje pomiędzy badanymi metalami a zawartością części splawialnych i iłu koloidalnego oraz pomiędzy zawartością Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd a węglem organicznym.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to estimate the influence of metallurgical slag on heavy metal concentration in tree species. The research included pH-reaction and conductivity of slag samples, heavy metal content (Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni) in slag, needles and leaves samples. The waste material is covered by vegetation and fulfils a soil function. The vegetation is self-sending. The plant cover being a result of natural succession consists of weeds, grasses, perennials, bushes and trees. Dominant tree species are birches and willows as well as poplar and pine. In slag samples are observed the raised concentration of cadmium, lead and copper. The low content of zinc is surprising. In tree material observed excessive heavy metal concentration especially lead and cadmium. Their accumulation is undoubtedly depended on tree species, but in this case heavy metal content in plant samples is a result of their presence in slag material. The higher heavy metal content in slag results the higher concentration in needles and leaves (probes S1 and S2, T1 and T2). Exception to this rule is the birch - probe B,, but in this case the pH is crucial. In samples with pH over 6.8 heavy metal mobility, their solubility and phytoavailability decrease. pH below 7 results in higher trace element uptake in plants.

Abstract

In this work the esterification of diethyl tartrate was studied. The research was focused on the enhancement of reversible reaction yield, which is accomplished by dewatering of the reaction mixture. The removal of water shifts the equilibrium towards the main product. Pervaporation was applied for this purpose, and results were compared to distillation. The advantages and limitations of both processes are discussed. The experimental part consists of dewatering of mixture after the reaction had reached the equilibrium, and was subsequently fed to the test rig equipped with a single zeolite membrane purchased from Pervatech B.V. Results show a significant conversion increase as a result of water removal by pervaporation. Compared to distillation no addition of organics is necessary to efficiently remove water above the azeotrope. Nevertheless, some limitations and issues which call for optimisation are pointed out. A simple numerical model is proposed to support design and sizing of the pervaporation system. Various modes of integrated system operation are also briefly discussed.

Abstract

In his contribution, the author discusses the Yakut forms in the travelogue of the physician, botanist and geologist Johann Redowsky (1.1.1774–8.2.1807). The travelogue was recorded on the occasion of Count Yurii Aleksandrovich Golovkin’s diplomatic mission to China. Redowsky accompanied Golovkin representing the Academy of Sciences. The travel diary documents Redovsky’s journey from Irkutsk to Kamchatka in 1806–1807 and contains much ethnographic information about Tungus and Yakuts. Redowsky’s material is interesting because it contains lexemes that are not found elsewhere, or at least not in the form noted in the diary.
