In the paper, we present a gradual transition from domination of men to equal treatment for men and women during the several decades of Polish expeditions to scientific stations in the Arctic and the Antarctic. This research has been based on the data available in the archives and at the database created within the project Female polar explorers (Polarniczki in Polish), which contains information about the number of female participants of expeditions to Polish research stations. Women participated in the seasonal expeditions almost from the very beginning when Polish research stations were established in 1970s and 1980s, but a significant increase of female participants is visible especially at year-round stations in the second decade of the 21st century. In 1984, the first Polish female scientist overwintered in the Antarctic and in 1996 in the Arctic. In 1986, the first woman became a leader of a summer scientific expedition to Spitsbergen, and in 1991 a first woman became the leader of a year-long expedition to Arctowski Station. In the presented database, there are 825 records, that correspond to 417 surnames of female participants in Polish polar expeditions, 145 participated in more than one expedition. Women who were working at Polish polar research stations represented a variety of occupations, but most of them were scientists or combined science and station service. The collected data clearly show that the days when the presence of women at polar stations was unwelcome are a thing of the past.

In 2014 the Jagiellonian University celebrated its 650th anniversary. The description of the university’s history on the jubilee website, however, makes no mention of the first female students – even though it was the first Polish university to welcome women.

Failure to bring the perspective of women into scientific inquiry makes it incomplete, slower, and more costly, says Dr. Alicja Puścian from the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology, Polish Academy of Sciences.

This article offers a survey of the careers of 54 Polish female historians who received the habilitacja degree in 1945–1989 at seven Polish universities – four of those were founded soon after the Second World War (University of Łódź, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, University of Wrocław, Maria Skłodowska‑Curie University in Lublin), while three had been established earlier (University of Warsaw, Jagiellonian University in Kraków and the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań). Analysis of personal files and various biographical materials has led the author to a number of conclusions about female historians’ academic careers. The careers reflected the discipline’s development, both in terms of the expansion of its field of inquiry, as well its methodological diversity and the conditions in which it operated. Career paths followed by women were not much different from those followed by men. Neither advancement requirements, nor employment policy at the schools of higher learning were discriminatory towards any of the sexes. However, as far as the female career advancement is concerned, there were some differences between the old and new universities: it was easier for women to obtain managerial positions at the latter.

Sprawdzamy przydatność globalnych źródeł surowych danych bibliometrycznych (ujmowanych jako ustrukturyzowane Big Data) w analizie kadry naukowej w czterech wymiarach: płci, wieku, dyscypliny i upływu czasu. Tradycyjne zagregowane dane dotyczące naukowców ogółem skrywają zróżnicowany obraz zmieniającej się dynamiki uczestnictwa mężczyzn i kobiet nauki w ramach dyscyplin i wieku. Analizujemy ograniczenia bibliometrycznych zbiorów danych, a badania globalne porównujemy z polskimi badaniami na poziomie krajowym. Wskazujemy wybory metodologiczne i ich implikacje, a także krótko omawiamy nowe możliwości globalnego badania aktywności publikacyjnej młodych kobiet (i mężczyzn) naukowców.
