Abstract

The paper presents the figure of the archivist Janina Kozłowska-Studnicka. In 1914–1920, she was connected with the archives in Vilnius. Subsequently, in 1921, she was appointed the manager of the archives in Grodno – a function she very successfully fulfilled until the outbreak of the Second World War. At the beginning of the occupation, Janina Kozłowska-Studnicka was relocated deep into the USSR and returned to Poland in 1946. She connected the last period of her life with the Kórnik Library, devoting herself to the ordering and cataloguing of its collection of manuscripts.

Abstract

The Poznań Branch of the PAN Archive in Warsaw was established in May 1956. From April 1974, the headquarters of the Branch was located in the building of the Poznań Society of Friends of Sciences in Poznań. The Archive collects, processes and makes available archival materials on the activities of the Polish Academy of Sciences and legacies of scholars. The legacies that form the backbone of archival resources are gathered through purchases, donations and deposits. Then they are compiled in the form of inventories and made available for research purposes. The collections of the Archive of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Poznań contain rich documentation of the history of science in Poznań and in Poland. They concern both scientific institutions, including laboratories, editorial offices and some institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań and other Poznań universities, as well as biographies of individual scientists, especially those connected to Poznań and Greater Poland. Archival collections with valuable materials related to groundbreaking events in the post-war history of Poznań and Poland are also interesting. Archival collections are also displayed at exhibitions and during scientific conferences. Archives from two legacies are available on the CYRYL portal – the Poznań Local Digital Repository.

Abstract

Remarkable contemporary Lebanese artist Akram Zaatari reveals a complicated post-war situation of multicultural society of the Middle East in the context of the Ottoman Empire. He compares his conceptual artistic practice to the work of the archaeologist on excavations. Being the artist-as-archivist, he recalls the European humanism in the heroic version of existentialism.

Abstract

A web page can be a useful object of analysis in historical research on the World Wide Web, but as a historical source, it does not have to be interpreted solely by its textual and visual strata. The article proposes an inclusive definition of the web page which ignores its visual content and relies on its non‑obvious elements (HTTP headers and response type, URI identifier), which can be successfully used in historical study. The modular nature of the web page is the cause of many problems in building its chronology or accessing archival versions; on the other hand, it makes it possible to gain new information about the past reality. The de-velopment of Web historiography is a condition for building the historicity of the medium referred to as the"eternal now" Such historiography relies strongly on software as a tool for producing historical sources and sometimes needs to explore new time dimensions like the stream or liveness. The article explores these issues by referencing media theory and web archiving works as well as several research projects from the field of the digital humanities. Can a historiographical approach to sources inspire criticism on digital artefacts and data outside the field?

Abstract

This article discusses the discovery of a hoard of gold coins in Zalewo (formerly Saalfeld). The duke of Prussia, Albrecht Frederick, was informed about the discovery by the Hauptmann of Przezmark ( Preussisch Mark), who sent him 144 coins in 1572. The Hauptmann also described the process of how the coins were obtained. These coins were described by the archivist at the dukes‘s court as florentinische Guldtgulden – which means ”florentine gold florins“. The authors claim, that this is the first described discovery of gold florins from Zalewo. A similar discovery was recorded in Zalewo in 1991. The coins sent in 1572 possibly became a part of the collection of the Duke of Prussia. Some of the gold florins found in 1991 were donated to the Museum of Warmia and Mazury.

Abstract

The article presents the problem of shaping national identity out of individual ethnic identity in the light of Mieczysław Wallis’ intellectual biography. As a representative of the second generation of the Lvov‑Warsaw school, he belonged to the group of several 20th‑century Polish humanists of the Jewish extraction. This condition left an indelible mark in his intellectual biography. Being aware of his ethnic background, he struggled for many years against the stigma of anti‑Semitism (in the form of social depreciation and racial categorization), yet he remained strongly attached to his Polish identity. He confirmed his resolution in everyday attitudes and in his writing. Repeatedly giving proof of his civic and patriotic attitudes, he fought for the survival of the Polish identity in the duties of the soldier, and continued to perform his cultural and educational activities during his internment as a prisoner‑of‑war for the period of several years. Then, after the war, he engulfed himself in academic activity in Poland, and constructed a specific program of aestheticization of reality, intended as a form of intellectual opposition to the manifestations of abhorrent ethnic discrimination culminating in disastrous dehumanizing effects. Following the indications contained in the archivized notes on and by Wallis, the author attempts to select, analyze and interpret these biographical clues, and she highlights the philosopher’s statements that reveal his personal experiences, reflections and views relating to the issue of national affiliation and identity. They inspire hope for finding out which factors were decisive in influencing Wallis’ life and intellectual interests.

Abstract

The article raises the issue of zoning of the central area of Zamosc based on downtown unrealized projects. It also explains the genesis of the formation of its range and the spatial layout, which affected the functioning of nineteenth-century fortress. As early as 1804. Entailer Stanisław Kostka Zamoyski planned to demolish the decaying fortifications and sell strip of land fortress for development. Change the situation on the political arena of Europe made Zamosc under Tsarist Russia became a fortress – a closed town, where civilian activity have been pushed to the back burner and separated from the historical center of strategic cordoned off the circuit. It was not until 24 years after the dissolution of the fortress, in 1880. returned to the development concept of post-fortress area in connection with the planned development of the city, but this met with opposition the military commission – the owner of the land. After regaining independence, the magistrate put forward ambitious building projects realization in the esplanade of the formerly fortress, which this time met with the resistance of the military commissions. As a result of the conversion of disputed land in the late 30’s the post-fortress area was possible to invest. An example was enacted in 1939, pioneering in many respects, zoning plan Zamosc by Władyslaw Wieczorkiewicza and Jan Zachwatowicz in which the authors called for implementation of the downtown on the basis of a linear array of bifocal between the old town (Stare Miasto) and the Nowa Osada suburb.

Abstract

The Electronic System «Archival Card Index» (АСI) represents the digital format of lexical and illustrative materials of the Commission of the Dictionary Living Ukrainian language (All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences), which created the «Russian-Ukrainian Dictionary» by ed. A. Krymsky and S. Yefremov, today recognized as the superlative of Ukrainian lexicography of the 20-30’s of the 20th century, and which is becoming even more relevant today. The value of the АСI consists in the fact that it contains materials IV volume of the «Russian-Ukrainian Dictionary» destroyed in 1933. For the first time since the 1930’s ACI became the object of scientific attention precisely as materials of the repressed Commission, for more than half a century they were considered lost. ACI digital format is needed in order to prevent its physical decay, to return to the linguistic-cultural process, to optimize research work. After all, ACI contains professionally processed linguistic sources of general dictionaries first half XXth century, which are of great value for the restoration of the authenticity of Ukrainian language thinking, to eliminate the prolonged russification of Ukrainian vocabulary and the creation of dictionaries of the Ukrainian language of the 21th century.

Maciej Rak's book is a very reliable and well‑structured study, based on unknown manuscripts by Jan Karłowicz, found in 2017 in the Scientific Archive of the Polish Academy of Sciences (AN PAN) and the Archive of the Polish Academy of Learning (PAU) in Kraków. An in‑depth analysis of Karłowicz's archives, i.e. the files of Lexicon of Polish Dialects [ Słownik gwar polskich], Lexicon of Polish Mythology [ Słownik mitologii polskiej] and the Little Lexicon of Lithuanian Mythology [ Słowniczek mitologii litewskiej], carried out on the broad comparative background, allows us to take a broader look at the scholar's achievements in the field of Polish dialectology as well as at his pioneering role in developing the concept of an ethnolinguistic lexicon. The reviewed study shows Karłowicz as a researcher who perfectly understands the linguistic and cultural realities of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Lithuanian aspirations to construct their own identity, separate from the Polish one.
The monograph Jan Karłowicz in the Light of Archival Materials restores this nineteenth‑century researcher with broad humanistic horizons to his proper place and rank in the history of science, not only in linguistics. It provides accurate arguments for re‑evaluating a very critical review of the Lexicon of Polish Dialects, published by Kazimierz Nitsch in 1911. For a long time, this criticism had had a very negative impact on the general assessment of Karłowicz's output by other linguists. All the more, we need to appreciate Maciej Rak's insightful attempt of breaking the aforementioned negative opinion and providing new interpretation of Karłowicz's unpublished works, that can be seen as a valuable heritage of the culture created during the period of Partitions of Poland.

Abstract

This is a presentation of letters regarding Maria Konopnicka from the Maria Dulębianka Papers held at the Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine in Lviv. After Maria Konopnicka's death in 1910 Dulębianka kept in touch with the poet's youngest sister Celina Świrska and her daughter Laura Pytlińska. Apart from tracing letters and notes written by Konopnicka's close relatives, the author of this presentation has gone through the letters of a wide circle of Maria Dulębianka's friends and acquaintances, among them Jan Baudoin de Courtenay, Stanisław Karol Lineburg (social activist from Suwałki) and Paulina Kuczalska-Reinschmitt (women's rights activist). Their correspondence gives a better insight into various facets of Dulębianka's life, her relations with Maria Konopnicka and the poet's close relatives. Some letters and notes contain information about behind-the-scenes arrangements to dispose of Konopnicka's country home at Żarnowiec and Dulębianka's collection of paintings (including her portraits of Maria Konopnicka).
