 abstract={The present discussion sets out to compare the description of the massacred corpse of Hippolytus that concludes the Senecan Phaedra, the account of the perverse practices of Hostius Quadra from the same author’s Naturales quaestiones, and the extreme cruelty of Roman amphitheatre spectacles common during the early Imperial period. Analysing these historical and cultural traces, the author formulates several theses about the mentality of the Romans in the era in question.},
