 abstract={The article traces the long run of European history, from its beginning in the form of the Greek myth of a Cretan princess and the ancient origins of the idea of Europe. Reflecting on the contintent’s complicated fate from the viewpoint of many tensions which contribute to the shared European identity, as manifest both in intellectual history and the history of conflicts, it is demonstrated how the essence of European community is embodied in the Horatian phrase concordia discors.},
