 abstract={The article discusses a previously unpublished version of the painting Alarm by Józef Brandt (1841–1915), painted in 1896 or later, held by the Polish Academy of Sciences Kórnik Library for almost thirty years. The artist based it on his own earlier version of Alarm, which was presented at the international exhibition in Berlin in 1896. The Kórnik painting is slightly smaller, has slightly different proportions and includes some compositional changes. Brandt’s work is examined from a variety of perspectives: its history, conservation- and art-related issues, and history of art. Part one of the paper is focused on the painting, while part two (to be published in the subsequent issue of Pamiętnik) sketches biographies and artistic silhouettes of its donors – the married couple Cezary Fabiński (1929–1998), a musician whose artistic career led from singing entertainment music on Polish scenes to being an opera singer in Austria, and Soja Fabinski-Tiller (1932–2019), an artist (active in the field of scenography, tapestry, painting and drawing), who had Russian roots, was born in Prague, and lived and worked in Austria (mainly in Vienna).},
