Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the role conceptual compressions play in the strategy of transcoding commonly applied in simultaneous interpreting. First, the most fundamental rules of the form-based transcoding and the meaning-based translation will be described. Second, the idea of conceptual compressions derived from the Conceptual Integration Theory will be discussed. As the last step, a specific pattern of conceptual compressions typical for the strategy of transcoding will be outlined.

Abstract

This study analyzes the depth of processing in consecutive interpreting. The data concern five professionals interpreting an easy and a difficult speech. Note-taking, target-text quality and the depth of processing have been studied. The results show that the participants apply a form-based approach, though meaning-based interpreting is more common if task circumstances are challenging. Higher accuracy and notes with more full words/fewer symbols might be related to form-based interpreting.

Abstract

The body of research on the perception of video game localization solutions is constantly growing. However, no attention was given to Polish video gamers’ language version preferences. The present paper presents the results of a survey of Polish dedicated gamers when it comes to the preferred localization scope, what factors influence that preference, what solutions characterise a good localization and which ones the localizers should avoid.

Abstract

The “fake” past tense is a linguistic phenomenon that occurs when the past tense morpheme does not refer to the past time. The paper aims to show the application of mental models in translation and translation teaching in the example of counterfactual constructions that include the past tense without temporal meaning, e.g., “If Sam knew the answer, James would know the answer”. The author illustrates fake past tense cues in different languages and applies concepts from cognitive theories.
