Abstract

The article offers an overview of recent proposals concerning the internal structure of noun phrases within the framework of generative grammar (specifically, the Principles and Parameters model and the Minimalist Program). The array of functional projections postulated above the level of NP (Noun Phrase) is presented, and the parallelism between nominal constructions and clausal structures is emphasized. The adequacy of the Determiner Hypothesis for Polish is briefly discussed.

Abstract

The paper is an attempt to show that the metaphoric structure of the concept of LOVE is correlated with its internal conceptual complexity. Various metaphors apply to different subcategories of LOVE and/or highlight different aspects of those subcategories. The differences stem from the differences in the conceptual structures between and among the subcategories and the resultant constraints on the possible mappings across domains. The whole system of metaphors forms a metaphoric hierarchy with lower mappings inheriting the structure of the higher mappings. It is shown that some conceptual metaphors allow for alternate mappings so there is no single set of correspondences between domains. The metaphors do not form a coherent system. The relations between some of them may be implicational, but others, owing to alternative conceptualizations, are contradictory.

Abstract

For the last 30 years the phenomenon of Political Correctness (PC) has marked many domains of everyday life not only in the USA where PC was born but also in Poland. As the PC ideology itself is subject of many polemical discussions, the question arises if its language, which is supposed to be non-racist, non-sexist, non-Iookist, non-ageist and non-ableist, also creates many controversies. But first of all, what does a politically correct language mean? Is it always correct? And what about its grammatical correctness and the culturespecific semantics of the newly created terms? How are politically correct terms created in English and Polish, which are two different language systems? This article which analyses the politically correct language in English and in Polish hopes to bring answers to the above questions.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyse the influence of the morphology construction of the verb on its meaning. The subject-matter of the description is verbs that express the cessation of life in the German and Polish languages. Because the derivatives and compounds form the predominant constituent part of the whole verb vocabulary in both languages and this refers also to our verb collection, the study is restricted to these types of verbs. After taking a general view of the partially different kinds of verb-formation in Polish and German and the explanation of the terminology in use, the author discusses the semantics of the particular prefixes, suffixes and the first elements of compounds as well as their influence on the meaning of the complete verbs and if necessary on the syntagmatic connecting of lexems. Tlie final section of the article is devoted to a presentation of some contrastive remarks on the verbs under investigation.

The purpose of the present paper is to analyse the press representations of Germany and the Germans, The material has been extracted from the texts published in Gazeta Hyl:orcza, Rzeczpospolita, and Wprost in the years 1999-2000. The analysis employs the framework of cognitive linguistics. It describes metaphors, metonyrnies, and cognitive models present in the analysed texts and attempts to show the connections between them, as well as the image of Germany and the Germans fanned on such basis

Abstract

Proponowany artykuł stanowi kontynuację analizy systemu znaczeń temporalnych polszczyzny. Przedmiotem obserwacji są konstrukcje stanowiące określony fragment tego systemu, a mianowicie konstrukcje przekazujące znaczenie tzw. czasu zegarowego. Spośród środków realizujących tę semantykę opisowi poddane zostały konstrukcje przekazujące znaczenie czasu zegarowego bez korelacji z czynnością. Zebrany material może stanowić podstawę do kompleksowej analizy synonimiki konstrukcji temporalnych języka polskiego.

Abstract

The tendency to use nouns - not exactly a new feature in the structure of the German language - is part of a linguistic development that precipitates the fury of the language purist. The language used in the controlled and administered world of today nevertheless depends on providing names that are as rational as possible for a wide scope of states and stages in everyday communication. The linguist has long been familiar with the use of nouns and the resulting syntactic flexibility or simplification in concert with laws of linguistic economy; this is seen as a developmental process. Yet to those who are concerned for the purity of language such developments arouse suspicion as do all moves towards linguistic economy. The aim of this investigation is to examine the condemnation of nominalization on the part these purists. as compared to the stand taken by linguists. who rightly point out that any classification into criteria of "right" and "not right" is unjustified: it is the service actually rendered by these linguistic forms that deserves evaluation in terms of performance.

Abstract

The article presents the initial results of the research on the university students' ability to decode hidden messages in the language of propaganda as it has a strong influence on our understanding of the social reality we live in and on language communication. This is only a part of the broad design on the subject indicated in the title of the paper and developed in its /111rod11c11011. This article will present the results of the initial research concerning the students' reaction to the written text to be understood with the help of critical reading. There are two parts of the research called by the author 'step one' and 'step two'. ·Step one' was already published in full (cf.Frysztacka-Szkróbka 1999). However it was necessary to summarise the results of ·step one' research in this article so as 10 be able to compare them with those obtained in 'step two'. Thus the final conclusions seem to be more reliable. The final goal (after having completed the whole research) will be to find ways of increasing the skill of critical thinking necessary to decode hidden messages.

Abstract

Lexical competence of a speaker/multilingual learner which should be understood not only as "the sum of speaker's konwledge of the items the lexicon contains" (Meara I 996), but their mutual connctivity as well, can be described in terms of two major characteristics: size and structure (organization). The article reports the study focussing on the organization of a mental lexicon of trilingual learners with three different language competences: L 1 - Polish (native), L2 - English (advanced) and L3 - German (intermediate). The group of 90 trilingual language students divided into three language groups (LI, L2, L3) was exposed to the task of creating association chains in three respective languages. The subjects were given a list of individual pairs of frequent words, selected at random, where in each pair one item constituted an input and the other, the output. The task consisted in filling in the gap in the association chain under the time limit (15 minutes for 20 association chains). The research was to give sample evidence of lexical competence in three different languages of the subjects in terms of their mental lexicon organization. The data collected aimed at showing examples of high versus low connectivity observed in the association chains, as well as showing similarities and differences in patterns of connections made in different languages. The variables considered were: the length of association chains, complete versus unfinished chains, types of associations: syntagmatic versus paradigmatic and concrete versus abstract words.

Abstract

This paper deals with the extent to which a high level of proficiency in the foreign language ( L2 ) affects the knowledge and use of the mother tongue (LI). There is strong evidence that in a bilingual context extended exposure to the L2 results in the weakening of LI skills, which is often referred to as LI attrition. It consists in a restructuring of the LI that involves mainly transfer and simplification. The paper discusses both processes in the light of research into LI competence developed by Polish university teachers and students of English as a foreign language.

Abstract

Drawing from the assumption that learners may benefit from errors, the author presents a study of learner's attitudes IO their own errors and of their reactions 10 the treatment of these errors. The results of the investigation not only support the initial claim, but are also indicative of learners' preferences for the kind of treatment they receive and expect in both oral and written production.

Abstract

In this article semantization of German words by means of original German texts is discussed. The author emphasizes the importance of the contextual aquisition of the word meaning in this semantization method. The original texts are the natural environment for the occurrence of lexical items. Exactly therein collocative word meanings and the logical word connections are realized in practice. The correct understanding of a text requires a great cognitive effort. Word meanings are found not only in their contextual environment, but also with the help of other semantization techniques such as: derivation and composition patterns, recognition of the lexical and grammatical status of the word owing to its position in the sentence, correct and swift recognition of keywords and text-connectors, recall of the word meaning by means of synonyms, antonyms, analogies, extralingual knowledge etc. Therefore the work with German original texts leads to elaborative durable semantization of word meanings and activates the multimodal memory very intensively.

Abstract

In this article various conceptions of memory are discussed. The old theory of the memory build-up divides memory in three partially independent, but also interacting types: ultrashorttime memory, shorttime memory and longtime memory. In the ultrashorttime and shorttime memory information is analysed very briefly, only the longtime memory enables the learner to memorize the information pennanently. Despite of its permanent memorization not each encoded piece of information can be recalled. The possibility of such a recall depends on the quality of information encoding. Distinctively and elaboratively encoded information (among them the lexical one) is retrieved in the consciousness with the help of many Retrieval-Cues. Unrelated information and therefore missing Retrieval-Cues make the recall much more difficult. The other theory of the memory build-up presumes that it is based on multimodal mental processes. According to this theory there are many mental systems, where the same information is encoded (visual-imaginary, semantic-lexical and sensory-kinetic mental systems). In these interacting systems the words have not only the semantic-lexical representation but also visual, emotional, kinetical, grammatical, orthographical and phonological ones. The semantic-lexical structures of memory are very complex too, because they consists of many semantic relations among lexical items such as lexical fields, word families, synonyms etc. Therefore it is clear that the creation of the representation of lexical items in possible many mental systems assures their quick recall, but demands from the foreign language learner a great cognitive effort at the same time.

Ethical principles



Editors of “Linguistica Silesiana”, to maintain high-quality published articles and scientific integrity, preserve and enforce ethical principles, regarding both authors and editors of scientific publications, as well as reviewers.


The following information on the ethics of publication for “Linguistica Silesiana” is based on guidelines for best practices for the editors of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).



I. Responsibilities of Authors


1. Authorship of work
Authorship should be limited to those who have made significant contributions to the concept and implementation of research and the interpretation of published research findings. Anyone who has contributed significantly to the creation of the work should be listed as co-authors. Persons whoparticipated only in parts of the research work resulting in the article should be listed in "acknowledgements" (see point 10). The lead author (or the author to whom correspondence should be addressed) should ensure that all co-authors (as defined above)are co-authors of the article and that there are no people who should not be listed among co-authors. The lead author (or author to whom correspondence should be addressed) should also ensure that all contributors have seen and approved the final version of the article and have agreed to its publication.


2. Disclosure and conflict of interest
The author should disclose any sources of funding for projects in his work, the contribution of research institutions, associations and other entities, and any material conflicts of interest that may affect his / herperformance or interpretation.


3. Standards for presenting research reports
The authors of the text based on their own research should provide a thorough overview of the work done and objectively discuss their significance. The work should contain enough details and references to scientific literature to allow others to repeat thework. Incorrect or deliberate inaccurate statements are treated as unethical and are not permitted.


4. Multiple, redundant or competitive publications
The author should in principle not publish materials describing the same study in more than one journal or primary publication. Submission of the same work to more than one journal editor at a time is unethical and is not permitted.


5. Confirmation of sources
The author should cite publications that have influenced the creation of a complex text, and each time confirm the use of the work of other authors.


6.Data access and data retention
The author should provide unprocessed data regarding the publication submitted for review or should be ready to allow access to such data. He or she should also retainthis data for a minimum of one year from publication.


7. Major errors in published works
If the author finds significant errors or inaccuracies in his or her published work, it is his or her responsibility to immediately notify the editor-in-chief and to cooperate with him or her to withdraw the article or publish the necessary errata.


8. Originality and plagiarism
The author submits to the editor only the original work. At the same time, it should be ensured that the names of the authors quoted in thework and/or excerpts of the works cited arecorrectly quoted or exchanged.


9. Ghostwriting
Ghostwriting/guest authorship is a manifestation of scientific misconduct and any detected cases will be exposed, including notification to the relevant authorities. Symptoms of scientific misconduct, especially violations of ethics in science will be documented by the editor.


10. Acknowledgements and information sources
Articles should include the acknowledgements for the people or institutions who have done the work for the author. Authors should also cite publications that have significantly influenced the finaleffect of the published paper.


II. Duties of the Editor-in-Chief and other members of the Editorial Board


1. Decisions to publish
The editor-in-chief is obliged to comply with current defamation laws, infringe copyright and plagiarism, and be fully responsible for the decisions that the articles should be published. He or she may consult with thematic editors and/or reviewers.


2. Confidentiality
No member of the editorial team may disclose information about complex work to anyone other than the author (s), reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial consultants (e.g. translators) and the publisher.


3. Impartiality and justice
The editor-in-chief should evaluate the content submitted regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, ethnicity, nationality or political preferences of the author (s).


4. Disclosure and conflict of interest
Unpublished articles or their excerpts may not be used in the editorial team's own research or reviewers without the express written permission of the author.


5. Engaging and collaborating in research
The editor-in-chief should guard the integrity of his or her magazine by applying corrections and withdrawals, as well as tracking suspicious research or alleged misconduct in publications and reviews. He or she should take appropriate action when ethical objections to the submitted work or published article arise.


III. Responsibilities of the Reviewers


1. Editorial decisions
The reviewer supports the editor in making editorial decisions and can also assist the author in improving his / her work.


2. Timeliness
Any selected reviewer who cannot review a work or knows that a quick review will not be possible should inform the editor-in-chief.


3. Objectivity standards
Reviews should be done in an objective way. The author's personal criticism is unacceptable. Reviewers should express their opinions clearly, using the appropriate arguments in support of their theses.


4. Confidentiality
Any reviewed article or other text for publication must be treated as confidential. It cannot be shown or discussedwith other people without the permission of the editor-in-chief.


5. Anonymity
All reviews are done anonymously, and the editorial team doesnot share the reviewer's data.


6. Disclosure and conflict of interest
Confidential information or ideas arisingfrom a review must be kept confidential and may not be used for personal gain. Reviewers should not review works that are subject to conflicts of interest arising from relationships or other connections to the author, company or workplace.


7. Confirmation of information sources
Reviewers should indicate publications that have not been referred to by the author. Any statement that the observation, source, or argument was previously discussed should be supported by a suitable quote. The reviewer should also inform the editor-in-chief of any significant similarity, partial overlap of reviewed work with any other published or known work or suspicion of plagiarism.



IV. Statement by the Publisher
In cases of alleged or verified scientific research, unfair publication or plagiarism, the publisher, in close cooperation with the editor-in-chief of the journal, will take all appropriate measures to clarify the situation and make amendments to a particular article. This includes the rapid publication of the errata or, in justified cases, the full withdrawal of the work from the journa
